Samuel S. Murray, MD

 

I am retired. Previously, I was a Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at UCLA and a Staff Physician in the Geriatric Medicine Service at the VA Medical Center in Sepulveda. I grew up in Walnut Creek, CA and was educated in the California public schools (Walnut Creek School, Del Valle High School, UC Santa Barbara). I went to medical school at the University of Minnesota and did an internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic. 

 

My wife (Elsa J. Brochmann, PhD) and I did research on various projects involving endocrinology and aging for 30 years. For the last 15 years of our careers, our work focused on the bone matrix protein, Spp24.

 

I am fortunate enough to be a father and grandfather. I am a devotee of Bach, a really terrible musician, a gardener, and an aged soccer player (Zico being my nom de soccer).

 

I became fascinated with microscopic creatures when I was given a small microscope when I was a boy. I love to watch these creatures in their environment and think about the life process. As far as is possible, I return all creatures to their environment after being observed.

Elsa J. Brochmann Murray, PhD

 

Elsa became a biochemist the old way, with a BA in zoology and a BS in chemistry. She received her PhD in biochemistry from the University of Minnesota. She was the Director (“Supreme Leader”) of the Bone Metabolism Laboratory at the VAMC, Sepulveda. She worked on many aspects of bone biology for more than 45 years.

 

Elsa is a happy mother and grandmother. She has many hobbies but is especially proficient at quilt making and has recently taken up painting.

 

Elsa loves animals and really knows zoology.
